Please expect small groups of EDUC261 students to be walking around the Library.

Fines Transfer December 2012

The Fines Transfer occurred on 5 December. This is to transfer outstanding fines from the Library Voyager system to Financial Services. Students with outstanding fines are unable to receive their exam results or re-enrol until the fine has been paid or queried/resolved.

Once the Student's fines have been transferred to Financial Services, they will no longer appear in MyLibrary and therefore when advising students re. fines, you should always check in Circulation (the Fines/Fees History tab). Check the Fines/Fees history and check for the date of the Bursar transfer.

Should a student indicate they have paid any "Bursar" transfer fines, please refer them to the Cashier.

If a student says that they have paid all fines and have any questions about their payment, please refer them to the Cashier.

As always, should you be unsure, please refer to the Access Services staff on x7507.

Multiple page scanning using Library copiers

Library IT has confirmed that the maximum amount of time for multiple page scanning on the Library's public copiers is three minutes from setup.

This is approximately 20 pages depending on how fast the client moves the book.

It is important to remind clients of this as once the copier begins to shut down, all unsaved work will be lost.

Procedures are available on the K drive under Service Zone Procedures and documentation 2012

How to add eReserve articles to iLearn - information for academics

We are receiving a number of requests from teaching staff regarding linking to eReserve documents from iLearn.

This is easy to do, and Ian Argent has provided a 'how to' guide below so that you can provide this information to teaching staff who may ask at the Service Zones.

There are 2 ways to link - EITHER using a single URL to link to ALL of the readings for a Unit OR using individual URLs for individual readings.

Here's what you do

First - linking to ALL of the readings for a Unit in eReserve
1. Go to the eReserve page at: https://www.library.mq.edu.au/borrowing/ereserve.php
2. In the 'Enter Unit Code' search box, type a Unit code, eg: AHIS100 and then 'Go'.
3. This gives you a list of all items on eReserve for the Unit AHIS100.
The URL which you have created is:https://www.library.mq.edu.au/borrowing/ereserve.php?command=searchCourse&coursenotes=0&exams=0&ereadings=0&course=ahis100
Use this URL if linking to all the readings for this Unit.

Second - linking to INDIVIDUAL readings for a Unit in eReserve
1. Go to the eReserve page at https://www.library.mq.edu.au/borrowing/ereserve.php
2. In the 'Enter Keywords' search box, type in 3+ keywords selected from author or book/journal title or article/chapter title, from the chosen eReserve record.eg: Bowie sacrifice world
3. This example retrieves a single record. Use whatever combination of keywords you need in order to retrieve 1 record. In this case the resulting URL is: https://www.library.mq.edu.au/borrowing/ereserve.php?command=searchKeyword&keywords=bowie+sacrifice+world
Use this URL if linking to this specific ereading.

Note that this procedure will change once Equella is operational.

University Undergraduate Handbooks

Two each of the Undergraduate handbooks have been placed at Service Zones 2 and 3 for student use.

Not necessary to keep an ID. Ask students not to take them out of Levels 1 ans 2. They have been tagged and marked as 'Library Copy'.

The Postgraduate handbook is only available online.
The Undergraduate handbook is also available online.

Borrowing During the Campus Card Update

Some issues have arisen during the Campus Card updating process with cards being given recycled barcodes (one barcode, for two different patrons).

Procedure for staff at desk to deal with this issue:
a. Record (screenshot and print) BOTH names, plus barcode.
b. Loan to patron if you can determine the correct identity.
c. Place printed information in queries tray at Zone 3.

Note: If 2 patron groups display for a single patron, press enter and continue to loan. This issue will be resolved in the system within 24 hours of the record being created.

New Books Display

The New Book Display is located on low slanted shelving to the right of Service Zone 3 (when coming into the Library).

Books are sorted according to the workday (Monday to Friday) when they are made available. The day is clearly marked on the shelves.

The books remain on the New Book Display for one week. That is: books added on a Monday are removed on the following Monday. These books are then shelved by LC call number on the open shelves.

The slanted shelves mean that book titles and covers are clearly displayed, so books are not maintained in a strict LC order.

New Book Display books can be borrowed from the display, using the Self-Checkers opposite Service Zone 2.

Note that new journal issues are not held on the New Book Display, but are either next to them on the Current Serials shelves or, if there is no LC call number listing for the journal on these shelves, on the open shelves.

2012 University Budget Overview - for your information

We remain in a sound financial position, with a consolidated underlying budget result of $22 million (or 2.9% margin) before DEEWR capital grants are added.

The University aims to maintain or strengthen commitment to three priority areas: the student experience; world class research and teaching; and commercial activities that provide an income stream.

Key statistics

We expect expenses will increase, for example:
- employee related expenses to grow by 3.7%
- repairs and essential maintenance to engineering plant and Uni buildings to grow by 3.7%.

While income from students will decrease:
- total student load is budgeted to decrease by 1.4%
- international student load is budgeted to decrease by 9.9%
- total Commonwealth Supported Places are budgeted to grow by 4.0%.

Funds allocated to Faculties and Offices will increase:
- overall the Faculty allocations increase by 5.5% over the 2011 forecast result
- overall the Offices allocations increase by 2.6% over the 2011 forecast result.

The University’s overall budgeted position is:
- consolidated revenue of $771.06 million
- consolidated expenses of $748.98 million.

The 2012 budget includes capital investment of $157.34 million, including:
- $92.24 million invested in the Australian Hearing Hub
- IT projects, including Moodle, receive $12.94 million.

We have been investing in health and medicine. Medical research receives the most Commonwealth Government funding of all research fields (~$500 million p.a. and ~34% of total research grants for universities). We have historically ranked 7-9th domestically without a school of medicine to attract medical research funds. Now that MUH and ASAM are established, our focus will be on increasing their research activity. Already, between 2011 and 2012 NHMRC grants have increased from $2.3 million to $4.5 million.

The Hospital is forecast to operate at a small deficit next year and move to a surplus thereafter, well ahead of our projections

Email access for casual and contract employees

Email access for casual and contract employees who are leaving the university or are awaiting to be reappointed under a new contract has been extended.

Staff leaving the university will generally be granted continued Macquarie University email access for up to three (3) months. This will ensure email access for the period between the end of year when many casual staff contracts expire to the generation of new casual staff contracts in February/March of the following year.

Staff leaving the University may also have Macquarie University email forwarded to an external address for six (6) months from the time of termination.

In addition, access to HR Online will be provided for up to two years after a user ceases to be an employee of the University, to enable access to payslips and payment summaries. Access to other Macquarie University systems will cease when the employee does not have a contract of employment with the University with the exception of HR Online.

This message was sent by Doug Barker, HR Operations Manager (Human Resources), and approved by Tim Sprague, Director, Human Resources.
