ECH216 Assignment
1. This is an online quiz due March 12 2012.
2. Students are provided with detailed instructions in iLearn on how to proceed. Check first that they have read the instructions and completed the practice quiz. The lecturers have confirmed (via Carol Walker as liaison) that the students are expected to do the assignment themseves.
3. The assignment questions revolve around trying to do set searches in Psychinfo to see the results of different searches, to do an author search and to search for something using the DOI and then checking in Ulrichs to see if the serial title is peer reviewed.
4. Some of the group have come directly from TAFE to start 200 level units, and may be unfamiliar with Library services. Ask what specific problem they have, having read the instructions and completed the practice quiz.
5. In my experience, finding the DOI (and explaining the DOI) can be the most complicated part. Staff may find this 3 minute YouTube video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Afmknkzeo - which explains how DOIs operate in Psychinfo to be of interest. Note that all platforms for the database are covered.
6. It is anticipated that this assignment will be offered in future years.

Past assignments 02 - tricky questions answered
1. BBA 300 level students asked for information on international visitors to Australia.
There are some yearly data for visitors visiting Sydney in the last 10 years. However they are in pdf format. Students have to do a bit of work in order to get the total number of visitors to Sydney for a particular year.
Look at page 27 of December 2009 report and you know what I mean. See link below.
For 1999-2002 figures look in the International Visitor Survey Annual 1999-2002.
http://www.ret.gov.au/tourism/tra/international/survey/Pages/default.aspx
2. The Encyclopedia of Australian Science is a register of the people and the many industries, corporations, research institutions, scientific societies and other organisations that have contributed to Australia's scientific, technological and medical heritage, with references to their archival materials and a bibliography of their historical published literature.
The website can be found at : http://www.eoas.info/
One of the more interesting features are the virtual exhibitions which can be found here: http://www.eoas.info/exhibs.html
3. ECH130 assignment on indigenous peoples:
Indigenous people were not officially recognised in stats before the 1960s so we cannot provide accurate details re health numbers etc. before then.
Mention the bicentennial: Australians: Ref DU 110 .A7964 vol 10 historical statistics ch 18 health and medicine which has an opening item on this before the statistics start.
Refer to the Indigenous Studies libguide, especially the Helpful Links and Recommended Readings.
Databases: look under: the subjects Australian Economy (for ABS statistics), Australian History and Indigenous Studies. Academic search premier has several full text items if you do a search on 'indigenous and health and Australia'.
Try the ABS Year Books (1301.0 NB or available online) and look for: indigenous well-being.
The Informit database has added a new link to an Indigenous Collection. This collection is made up of various Informit full text publications and citations which have been grouped under the one heading to make searching easier.
The main Informit page displays the collection as the fifth collection in the list: http://search.informit.com.au/
4. Law 203 - Wilkinson v
Downton 1897 Queens bench.
It is available on Westlaw. At Search for database put in Queens bench and click Go. At the next screen select All Law Reports and OK.
Enter "Wilkinson v Downton". There are 84 results because it has been cited that many times! The case is number 82.
It is also available in print from Times Law Reports Vol 13, p388. 1986-1897. KD288.A5

Burning CD/DVDs in the Library
The Library PCs (both client and service zone) do not have the capacity to burn CDs or DVDs.
Clients may ask about this from time to time as there are occasionally assignments which request the burning of certain material.
Information extracted from Luke Jay's email dated 8/8/11.
