Remote Database Access for non-Macquarie or ex-Macquarie clients

Remote database access is available via a Sponsored OneID, which can be supplied to "Contractors, Consultants, third parties or PhD students who has relation with Macquarie University to work on a specific task for a specific time."

As there are licencing agreement restrictions with our vendors, remote access is limited to those undertaking relevant work or tasks with the University. If a client believes they fall into this category, their contact or supervisor within the University will need to request a Sponsored OneID on their behalf. They can do so by submitting a OneHelp ticket with the following details:

Name of the person they are sponsoring
Function of the sponsored individual within the University (why do they need access?)
Start and finish dates for access
Email address for the sponsored individual (to provide them with the Acceptable Use Policy)

Note that the Library cannot make these arrangements. The client must arrange this through their Facility contact.

Each report consists of 30 to 40 pages of key statistics and analysis on market characteristics, operating conditions, current and historical performance, major industry participants and more.

2. Industry Risk Rating which covers over 500 industry risk rating reports on Australian industries.

Factiva Update

The Australian Financial Review, Australian Financial Review Smart Investor and the Business Review Weekly are now available on Factiva as full text articles.

This is important as these journals/newspapers are heavily used by the Business and Economics students.

Australian Financial Review - full-text 1987 to current.
AFR Smart Investor - full-text 2005 to current.
BRW (Business Review Weekly) - full-text 1989 to current.

In addition, Factiva's enhanced Companies/Markets section includes:

Industry snapshots (news, industry profiles and analysis).
Detailed company data (geographical, business activity, developments and peer comparison).
Peer comparison (sales, market capitalisation and employees).

This information can be exported to Excel.

Features included in a typical report are industry overview, industry size and value, merger, acquisition and alliance activity, market outlook, leading companies, policy and regulatory environment.

To find an industry click on Companies/Markets Tab then Industry to find an industry of interest.

Printing PDF documents in databases

When printing PDF documents from any databases, especially when PDFs are selected, always use the printer icon located within the PDF frame. EBSCO databases are an example of this.
The printer icon generally looks like an old-fashioned desk printer. If in doubt, hold the cursor over the icon and wait for it to identify itself.

If you click FILE - SAVE, all you print are the Ebscohost details in the outside frame around the pdf document, and where the pdf should be will be just a blank page. This is because the html coding for Ebsco’s pdf documents really consists of two frames.

So for all databases that show a print/save icon at the top of an article, use it instead of the FILE - SAVE option in all cases.
Use FILE - SAVE only when there is no alternative.

Additional:

If the file refuses to save, a common reason is that the allocated file name actually has too many characters to be saved.

If you change it to something shorter, eg the author's surname, it should save.

Finding Australian Standards

For queries relating to the location of Australian or International Standards, please following the steps below:

Go to: Databases - Browse databases by name - S - Standards Australia (SAI Global)

This database contains Australian standards only.

There is no access to International Standards (eg ISO, ANSI, BSI etc). However, many Australian standards are very similar to the International Standards. To check, search for the corresponding Australian Standard number to that of the ISO standard eg: 14000

Note: check the catalogue for Australian accounting standards and Australian financial standards.

Westlaw

Quick Search Tips

1. To find a journal in Westlaw, open the database and type the title of the journal into the "Search these databases" box on the left of the screen. What we call a journal, Westlaw calls a "database".

2. An index of journal titles comes up. Select your title. Once you have clicked on the journal title in Westlaw, a search box appears. To find a particular article, type the title of the article (in inverted commas) into the search box. This seems to work better than using the Field search option.

3. Westlaw does not have a browse function. It works in the same way as LexisNexis ie. you can search within an individual journal but you cannot browse issue by issue.

4.The number of results from your search is displayed under "results lists" (top left side of the screen). Directly underneath is a link to "full screen list" which brings up all the results of your search (20 per screen). Click on the right arrow at the bottom to go to the next set.

5. The links under "results plus" are similar to the "related results" you get on other databases. They are not part of your initial search.

UNESCO-EOLSS encyclopedias

Note following about the UNECSO-EOLSS encyclopedias:

Go to: http://www.eolss.net/.

Access is IP-controlled (ie you must use a Library PC).
Click the link EOLSS link to open the page.
Click 'Access for Institutions' (located on left under Login) and then choose 'Click here to access encyclpedias' (located on the middle of the screen).

These encyclopaedias provide information on the Natural Sciences and Social Sciences in all their deep specializations, and on global issues such as climate change and sustainable development.

Peer reviewed journals in A+ Education database

If education students ask how they can check if a journal is peer reviewed and have been referred specifically to A+ Education:

Click on Titles tag, above the Green line (at the top right) and it will display a list of journals with a P icon for peer review.

If students are simply searching for peer-reviewed articles on the subject of English:

1. Use MultiSearch. Enter the search, and then use the clouds on the left to select for Peer-reviewed Journals and for full-text journal articles.

2. Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory remains a suitable source but doesn't list all the journals. To use Ulrich's, go to the Database page, and use the Browse Databases by Name. Select U and then Ulrich's.
Cut and Paste the journal title or ISSN (of the journal article to be checked) into the search bar, and select the correct title when the search is done (may be multiple journals with the same title). Open the full journal title and check for the entry: Refereed. Yes means the journal is peer-reviewed.
But also check the Start Year to be sure the year of publication is within the year range that is peer-reviewed.

MyiLibrary Update

MyiLibrary is one of the ebook collections accessed from the Database webpage. It is the ebook collection individually selected by the university and library staff.

MyiLibrary allows a maximum of 4 sim users per title at one time.

Students attempting to access a book with 4 users already reading it will receive a warning it is unavailable/in use. If asked, tell them the limit is 4 simultaneous readers per e-book, and advise them to try again later.

Where and What is Bloomberg

Bloomberg is accessible only through the Special PC on level 2 (located opposite the Brunner Room).

Like Datastream, it is only available to postgraduates and staff, and can be booked using the Room Bookings software.

Like Datastream, you will find it located under Resources.

Bloomberg's advantage to our students is that it is a professional analytics tool currently used by bond market analysts and as such gives them experience in a tool many will need to use once they graduate. It gives a wide array of information about the bond market, mergers, acquisitions and more. It gives minute by minute analysis of stock market equities through the day.

You can look up individual equities, get analysts' reports, SWOT analysis for commodities and country statistics. Bloomberg also has its own news service students can access through the database.

There is a HELP key on the keyboard that with one click will tell you what you are currently looking at. Two clicks and you are connected to a 24 hour immediate support facility run by Bloomberg. The coloured keys at the top of the Bloomberg keyboard (kept at Service Zone 3) are short cuts to various functions.

Alumni Databases

Concerning the breadth of the Alumni Ebsco Databases: the Ebsco databases that Alumni access is not the same version that Macquarie University Staff and Students access.

The Alumni version is more limited than the full version.

As the password is free, recommend to alumni that they request the password and explore the databases to see if they are useful. If they are not, they can allow their access to lapse.

Which databases and how do I access them?:
Alumni are able to apply for access to two EBSCO databases:
Academic Search Alumni Edition
Business Source Alumni Edition

To access these:
1. Alumni must fill out the Alumni Database request form.
2. They will be sent a confirmation email containing username and password.
3. They must access the databases through the EBSCOhost link at the Alumni site: Access to the databases via Google or other methods will not work.

Alumni connect to these databases through the alumni webpages: http://www.mq.edu.au/on_campus/library/borrowing/what_can_i_borrow/alumni/
Under Database Access, you will find both the link to the application form and below the access to log into these databases.
Alternative route: from the Library homepage: on left select Borrowing - What can I borrow? - Alumni to demonstrate access for a client. This page has the Library Card and Database Access application form links.
