Google Docs

Google Docs is an Google application that allows clients to create share and view documents. Due to incompatibility, our problem occurs when a client tries to print out a Google Doc in the Library.

The Print Stations will attempt to print the file but fail. The credit will be deducted and the file will 'stick' in the file queue, needing to be cleared.

The solution:
1. Contact the Service Coordinator to restore the credit and clear the print queue.
2. Advise the client to always convert Google Docs to pdfs before attempting to print them.

To convert to pdf: File - Save As - then change Save as Type to PDF (*.pdf)

Library IT is investigating how to resolve this.

iLearn password

The Library login (for PC use, databases etc) is the OneID.

For students, the OneID is their Campus ID number and their iLearn password.
For staff, the OneID is their staff ID number with 'mq' at the front (eg: mq201200000) and their gmail password.

For students who do not yet have an iLearn password, first go to: https://mypassword.mq.edu.au/index.php?screen=MQInitPW
[Mcquarie University Homepage - Students - Popular Links box - First time login]

For problems with passwords, go to: http://informatics.mq.edu.au/help/
[Macquarie University Homepage - Students - OneHelp IT Help (blue box on right)]
This page gives:
1. the contact details and opening hours for IT Help
2. scroll down to Passwords for the link to test your password if unsure or have your password sent to you if you have forgotten it.
Note: students can access their email without passwords on the Catalogue laptops in front of SZ3.

Final essential information:
Multiple incorrect password attempts will lock a student record (approx. 4 tries).
At best, automatic unlocking of the record will take 20 minutes.

If IT Help have to create a new password to fix a problem, remember that the Library is not connected to their systems. We can be 24 hours out of date with such changes at any time. In such cases, refer the student to the Guest Login PCs or to the C5C computer lounges. Both will provide the access the student needs until the password change comes through.

USBs at Service Zones

Clients are unable to save files to computers on Level 1 and 2.

There are USBs available in the drawers of the Service Zone desks for this purpose, should a client forget their USB.

When lending USBs you do not need to ask for ID, but inform clients that they must return the USB to the information desk when finished. They must delete all files from the USB before returning as we will not do this service.

If you have any questions or notice that supplies of USBs are low please advise your Service Coordinator. Stocks are kept in the Stationery cupboard in the backup staff area Level 2.

VPN or off-campus authorisation to access databases

For Macquarie University staff or students to access licenced content (eg databases) outside the IP range of the university PCs (ie on their own home PC), they must set up a VPN (Macquarie Onenet) access.

NB: Very important - the access must be through Macquarie OneNet (no other option).

Once you have set it up, and authenticated using your OneID login, it is the same as being on Campus.

Details on how to set it up are at: http://www.its.mq.edu.au/VPN/vpn.html

There are various operating systems options and instructions available.

Software Downloads available to MU staff

Staff:

Go to the University homepage and click staff. Under Popular Links click Software Downloads.
Login using your 'Single Sign-on User Name' (Username: mq+staff number, Password: gmail password).

The software:
Nvivo 7 and 8 (a specialised Quantitative Statistical Analysis tool).
Minitab (a statistical package to analyse data)
Sophos Antivirus
Endnote

Note: for students to access available software downloads:
Go to the University homepage and click students.
Select the tab Online Tools.
Scroll down to Software Downloads.
Enter OneID login.

infodesk email on student PCs in the Library

The Ask a Librarian Email Us link on the library homepage only works if the PC opening it has a default email client set up eg: Outlook, hotmail etc. Very few home PCs will not have this set up.

However, the student PCs in the Library and C5C do not have an email client set up on them. This is a deliberate IT policy.

It means that if you click on Email Us, nothing will happen. Emails cannot be sent to the infodesk@library email from the student PCs.

Ezproxy server - Instructions for when it is down

The Ezproxy server provides staff and students access to the online databases. It is maintained by University IT.

If remote access to Library services is lost, report this to the Service Coordinator so they can report it to Library It.

Note that not all remote access problems relate to the Ezproxy. There can be multiple causes, but advise the Service Coordinator after any report clients are having problems with remote access.

While you are waiting for service to be restored (if the problem is due to Ezproxy), staff and students on campus who want to access online databases from within the University network can be advised to follow the instructions below.

Example:
To access the AATD base from the database list on the Library’s website the user is directed to the following web address:
http://simsrad.net.ocs.mq.edu.au/login?url=http://search.informit.com.au/search;res=AATD

Simply remove the first portion of the web address to access the database. So the web address in this example would become:
http://search.informit.com.au/search;res=AATD

Remote access is not possible while the Ezproxy server is down.

For further assistance please contact Library IT Help.

Andrew Aupek

2. Copy and Add to Favourites. (When you click Favourites on the Link Bar you will see Add to Favourites at the top of the list).

3. Open Favourites and find your link.

4. Click on and drag the link up into the Quicklinks Bar.

5. To remove a Quicklink: Right-click on the link and select Delete.

Logins for public computers on Level 1 and Level 2

Levels 1 and 2 public computers require the OneID login to connect to the internet or to databases.

OneID is:

Macquarie University staff: Username: MQ + staff ID number Password: Gmail password

SIBT students: SIBT ID number + SIBT student wireless account (available only from SIBT Office)

CME students: CME ID number (don't include the CME at the beginning)

Student IT Help and Library IT cannot assist with any password acquisition, problems or resets for SIBT or CME students. They must go to their student centres for assistance.

Guest Login PCs have been set up to provide access for clients without OneIDs. They are located on Level 2 at the corner of Service Zone 3. Clients must be signed in by Library staff using the Guest Login form and procedures.

Additional information: the domain name to be used is: MQAuth

Burning CD/DVDs in the Library

The Library PCs (both client and service zone) do not have the capacity to burn CDs or DVDs.

Clients may ask about this from time to time as there are occasionally assignments which request the burning of certain material.
