The Macquarie Theatre refurbishment works will commence on site from Friday 9 December.
The Theatre will be undergoing significant refurbishment which will take the venue from a 1970s traditional theatre into a more modern, sustainable teaching and learning facility allowing large group teaching (max. 500 people) alongside small group active learning space (max. 60 people).
Initial works will involve preparing the site for the refurbishment, with site fences to be erected. This will affect pedestrian and vehicle access down Western Road and around W5C and W5B (Macquarie Theatre).
Clear identification of the work site can be seen on this map, and alternative access routes are also highlighted. Pedestrians wishing to reach Wally's Walk from the W4 car park will be able to do so by heading down Western Rd. A new set of stairs will link the pathway adjacent to W5A with Wally's Walk. There will be no pedestrian thoroughfare between buildings W5C and W3A. Current exit and entrance doors in W3A will still be accessible.
Access from W3A, C3A and C5A to Wally's Walk will be maintained.
Pedestrians are advised to take caution when moving around the refurbishment site.
The Coffee Cart will be moved to opposite the Theatre, outside C7A (old Library).
It is anticipated the Theatre will reopen in January 2013.
Note that the Lotus Theatre (W6D) will be the alternative venue for large group lectures in 2012 (see Blog post W6D - Lotus theatre).
