Many students are interested in summer study. They want to be able to fast-track their studies or to catch up a failed subject. Summer study also allows the University to more efficiently manage student demand. Now that the Australian Government is making changes to the higher education sector that allow us to offer summer units at the regular Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) rates, the University will give our students this choice.
To respond to this demand, Summer School is therefore being broadened and renamed Session 3. It will run for seven weeks (six weeks of teaching and one week of exams) making it quite intensive.
For that reason students will be allowed to only take a maximum of two Session 3 units at once, to improve their chances of success.
The shorter length of the term also means that there will be some differences to how these units are delivered, for example using online or group sessions as well as face-to-face teaching. In all other respects Session 3 will be a regular part of the academic year, and 1st and 2nd half-year/semester will be renamed Session 1 and Session 2 to reflect this.
Session 3 units will have identical learning outcomes, means of assessment and prerequisite structures. Students will also receive equivalent services and support to those in Sessions 1 and 2 (such as access to library services; food and beverages; and disability, English language, mentoring and other student services).
Session 3 will normally run from December through to January, but as the Government changes do not commence until 1 January, 2012, the first Session 3 will run from 3 January to 17 February, 2012.
Following discussions with departments, more than 45 units will initially be offered across all four faculties, including People and Planet and postgraduate units. Arrangements to teach these units this summer have already been made with the relevant departments, and the Centre for Open Education will oversee the management of Session 3, and handle all enquiries from staff and students, in this first offering.
Session 3 will then be incorporated into normal academic management processes in time for its next delivery in December 2012.
Enrolment for Session 3 is via eStudent and opens on October 17. Some units may have limits on the number of students who can enrol to maximise the learning experience.
