Item Searching on Voyager

If you need to go into Voyager to do an Item Search (ie find out more about a missing book), sometimes you cannot cut-and-paste the call number over.

On the screen select Browse instead of Find, and you will be able to paste the call number and click Search.

Campus Card Update

Please note the following developments (email by Kathie Fraser 2 February 2012)

Photo ID is now able to print both MQ staff and MQ student campus cards. It will be awhile before they are able to print SB cards.

Casual staff will now be issued a staff card using their MQ ID number. They no longer need to apply for Associate Borrowing.

The option to apply for Associate Membership as a Casual staff member will be removed from Library webpages in the next few days.

Direct any enquires from Casual staff for cards to the HelpDesk in C5C.
(Note: Photo ID will be relocating to the Atrium from next Mon 6th Feb during the new student enrolments)

Database or Remote Access Issues

Previously, all complex database access issues and remote access problems encountered by staff and students of MU which could not be resolved at the service desks by standard procedures were referred to Bill Stinson as 'database administrator'.

Now that Bill has retired, please treat these issues as OneHelp requests and request that your Service Coordinator forward them to Library IT using the OneHelp module.

It will help IT if you are able to provide exact information:

for a client: their name, ID number, contact details, operating system, type of internet connection (broadband, wireless), medium used (ipad, iphone, Mac, PC etc) and as much detail as possible on the problem.

for a database issue: the name of the database, any error messages (capture the screen if possible as an attachment to the ticket), what is happening, and which browser you are in at the time (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox etc).

The answer to why something is going wrong is often found in the choice of internet connection, browser or operating system so this level of detail can be extremely useful to the IT staff.

If in any doubts, please contact your Service Coordinator to assist.

There are a set of tests that can be undertaken that will resolve the majority of remote access or database access issues. Campus Card Update

Barcodes for the new staff and student campus cards are now being loaded into Voyager.

Barcodes on the old staff and student cards will no longer be accepted at the SelfCheck machines.
Signage is in place to direct patrons to the Service desks if they experience difficulty borrowing.

Please ask for the old campus card and lend using their ID number. Advise them to continue to come to the service desks until they receive their new card.

Boxes for disposal of used toner cartridges, used batteries etc.

I have not been able to find any location at present on campus for disposal of used batteries and mobile phones.

The Spot (Campus Hub) has a box to collected used toner cartridges.

There are no boxes in the Library for the collection of used batteries, mobiles or toner cartridges handed in by clients.

Nearest public phone to the Library

1. Go to the Campus Hub. There is one public phone in the entrance on the west side of the building (entrance closest to the old library).

Note that there are no public phones available within the Library.
Please use your judgement in making the service zone desk phones available to a client. Refer to your Service Coordinator if unsure.

Access Services Online forms

The Access Services online forms, like the Library Resources online forms, are not currently working correctly.

1. For all Associate Card requests: fill out the manual form at the Service Zones and leave in the tray on the SZ3 shelving.

2. For all other Access Services online forms eg Alumni, fill out the form (either the client if present or over the phone), print the form and put the printout in the Associate Card requests tray on the shelving in SZ3.

3. If at all possible to determine, note on the printout what failed to work eg: an Alumni request I filled out recently allowed me to fill all the fields except the Surname field. Record this information on the printout including the date and time.

4. We will be advised when the problem with online forms is resolved.

Request to copy pages from a thesis and post them to the client

The answer depends on the status of the client.

If they are a Macquarie distance education student or staff member they could have the copy posted to them. They would need to make a distance education request, pre-pay for the copying and sign the necessary forms. The cost is 15c per page. There is no postal charge. The turnaround time for the photocopying is 24 hours, but a number of days would have to be added for organizing payment and the filling in of forms.

If they are a Macquarie non-distance student or staff member, they could collect the copy from the Library so we would not post it to them.

If they are not a Macquarie student or staff member we could post the copy to another library but not direct to them. They would need to make a request to the interlibrary loans section of another library for a copy of the thesis. The cost is $110 including postage. The turnaround time is approximately two weeks (the theses have to be sent away for a master copy to be made).

Online book order forms - troubleshooting

are currently not working.

It will seem to the client that the forms are working -- they will get an on screen indication that the message is sent and they may (or may not) get an email indicating their request was sent -- but we are not receiving the requests into our Book ordering email account.

Service Zone staff: please advise clients that they can send requests directly to:

Of course, the problem is that there is no indication when someone has attempted to use the forms.

Comms and Library IT are looking into the situation.

ARC work area update

Postgraduate Distance Students - use of student ID + D

A growing number of our postgraduate students are also distance students, living interstate or in some cases overseas.

Document Supply identifies these students by adding a D to the end of their student ID number for use in the VDX system. This triggers the Document Supply staff to mail books and to provide other distance education services.

Points to remember:
1. We do not know who these students are until they request items through Document Supply and are sent the email to collect them from the Library. You may then receive a query from the student advising that they cannot come to the Library due to distance.

2. They will always be listed on Voyager as 'internal' students.

3. Books are never sent overseas. Articles and chapters as available under the Australian copyright laws can be sent. Books are however mailed all over Australia.

What we do:
1. If a student contacts you to advise that they cannot access eReserve, databases etc., and give their student ID number ending with a D, advise them that the D works only to request items through Document Supply. For all other library services, drop the D.

2. If the student reports they have received an email from Document Supply to collect items, but they cannot come to the Library due to distance:
In business hours, transfer them to Document Supply - x7891
Outside business hours: 1) Give them Document Supply's contact details and request they contact Document Supply directly. 2) Take their details and details of the problem and send Document Supply an email, cc it to the client.

3. If the student has already set up the arrangement with Document Supply, and something goes wrong, refer it to Jim Kelly x7895

If unsure at any point, please refer back to your Service Coordinator for assistance.

Login Information for Guest PCs

Forms for Guest PC logins are housed at both Service Zone 2 (blue folder) and Service Zone 3 (yellow folder).
These folders contain the forms and procedures for their use. The passwords are also included.

Note: The passwords remain private information for Library staff only. Please do not allow guests or other clients access to the passwords.

Virtual Browse Bookshelf on the catalogue

Clients are able to browse our shelves (open access and ARC) remotely using the Virtual Browse Bookshelf on the catalogue. Located at the bottom of each catalogue record, the Bookshelf displays an image of books on either side of the item being searched. You can use the arrows on the left and right to view the range of books in your subject area.

To view:

Open the Catalogue.

Locate your book title and open the catalogue record.

The Bookshelf automatically opens at the bottom of the record. Scroll down to 'Browse this shelf' - the covers of the books are shown.

Use the arrows at the top to move left and right. The Up arrow returns you to the original book.

Move the cursor over the book to get more detail including call number.

Important: The Virtual Bookshelf does not operate in Google Chrome. If a client says they can't see it at home, this is the probable reason.

Guest wireless login

There is no guest login service available through the wireless for library clients with their own laptops. There only guest login options available are the three Guest Login PCs located on Level 2. Refer to the Guest Login procedures for conditions.

If a library client mentions a connection with a particular faculty, please refer them back to that faculty, which may be able to arrange access if the client is a guest lecturer, visiting fellow etc.

For a member of the general community, there is no access to the university wireless network.

Printing PDF documents in databases

When printing PDF documents from any databases, especially when PDFs are selected, always use the printer icon located within the PDF frame. EBSCO databases are an example of this.
The printer icon generally looks like an old-fashioned desk printer. If in doubt, hold the cursor over the icon and wait for it to identify itself.

If you click FILE - SAVE, all you print are the Ebscohost details in the outside frame around the pdf document, and where the pdf should be will be just a blank page. This is because the html coding for Ebsco’s pdf documents really consists of two frames.

So for all databases that show a print/save icon at the top of an article, use it instead of the FILE - SAVE option in all cases.
Use FILE - SAVE only when there is no alternative.

New Campus Card Update

The new Campus Card is being distributed to all staff and students over the next few weeks.

It is your key to a range of resources, facilities and services on campus and elsewhere.

The new card will replace your current cards and can be used for ID, printing, photocopying, borrowing library books, security door access and is an optional re-loadable, prepaid Mastercard® issued by the Commonwealth Bank, letting you make purchases and access your money wherever Mastercard is accepted on and off campus and online.

Library Business Services will advise when the new staff cards are available for collection.
Instructions about your old card will be provided at this time.
Note that swipe readers across campus are being changed to the new system in tandem with card distribution.

SIBT database access

Serials: how to find journals in the library

The broad rules for serials are:

All issues of serials that are more than 2 years old are located in the ARC.
Each year, Library Resources will move the 2 year old issues into the ARC - usually in December-January.

Current serials (second most recent issue to 2 years old) are located in the open collection and interfiled with the books. These will display on the catalogue as 'On Open Shelves' and have been placed in black pamphlet boxes.

Serials where all issues are on open shelves are shown on the catalogue as 'Main Collection'. These collections will remain on the open shelves and will not move into the ARC.

The most recent issue of a serial is located on the New Serials Display (next to the New Book Display opposite service zone 3 level 2). The previous issues will be moved to the black pamphlet boxes on the open shelves.

1. BBA 300 level students asked for information on international visitors to Australia.
There are some yearly data for visitors visiting Sydney in the last 10 years. However they are in pdf format. Students have to do a bit of work in order to get the total number of visitors to Sydney for a particular year.
Look at page 27 of December 2009 report and you know what I mean. See link below.

Indigenous people were not officially recognised in stats before the 1960s so we cannot provide accurate details re health numbers etc. before then.
Mention the bicentennial: Australians: Ref DU 110 .A7964 vol 10 historical statistics ch 18 health and medicine which has an opening item on this before the statistics start.
Refer to the Indigenous Studies libguide, especially the Helpful Links and Recommended Readings.
Databases: look under: the subjects Australian Economy (for ABS statistics), Australian History and Indigenous Studies. Academic search premier has several full text items if you do a search on 'indigenous and health and Australia'.
Try the ABS Year Books (1301.0 NB or available online) and look for: indigenous well-being.

The Informit database has added a new link to an Indigenous Collection. This collection is made up of various Informit full text publications and citations which have been grouped under the one heading to make searching easier.

Downton 1897 Queens bench.
It is available on Westlaw. At Search for database put in Queens bench and click Go. At the next screen select All Law Reports and OK.
Enter "Wilkinson v Downton". There are 84 results because it has been cited that many times! The case is number 82.

Finding Australian Standards

For queries relating to the location of Australian or International Standards, please following the steps below:

Go to: Databases - Browse databases by name - S - Standards Australia (SAI Global)

This database contains Australian standards only.

There is no access to International Standards (eg ISO, ANSI, BSI etc). However, many Australian standards are very similar to the International Standards. To check, search for the corresponding Australian Standard number to that of the ISO standard eg: 14000

Note: check the catalogue for Australian accounting standards and Australian financial standards.

C5C Forum (formally C5C T2)

C5C has two lecture theatres. Following renovations in 2011, the theatre closest to Student IT Help (room 244), on the eastern side of C5C, is now known as C5C Forum. Entrance is on ground level and entryways are black with 'Forum' signage.

The lecture theatre on the western side is still known as C5C T1. The entrance opens directly onto the courtyard.

USBs at Service Zones

Clients are unable to save files to computers on Level 1 and 2.

There are USBs available in the drawers of the Service Zone desks for this purpose, should a client forget their USB.

When lending USBs you do not need to ask for ID, but inform clients that they must return the USB to the information desk when finished. They must delete all files from the USB before returning as we will not do this service.

If you have any questions or notice that supplies of USBs are low please advise your Service Coordinator. Stocks are kept in the Stationery cupboard in the backup staff area Level 2.

SIBT students wireless access

1) SIBT students can get access to the wireless network
2) They get access to the network and catalogue only, not to Library Databases.
3) They access the wireless through MacquarieOneNet (not Macquarie Public or any other)

4) Their usernames and passwords are supplied by SIBT- students must go to SIBT office in order to get these passwords. Student IT help cannot assist with this.
5) Any IT related issues for SIBT students should ordinarily be sent to SIBT for assistance, rather than Student IT help.

The Marketing Unit does not assign ISSNs for serials that Macquarie University publishes. Instead, clients publishing a new serial format publication need to contact the Australian ISSN Agency at the National Library.

University smoke-free campus policy

From 1 January 2011, smoking was restricted to ten designated ‘smoking zones’ on campus.

This policy applies to all University campuses and facilities. Anyone who works, studies or visits the University is only be able to smoke in the designated areas.

Borrowing During the Campus Card Update

Some issues have arisen during the Campus Card updating process with cards being given recycled barcodes (one barcode, for two different patrons).

Procedure for staff at desk to deal with this issue:
a. Record (screenshot and print) BOTH names, plus barcode.
b. Loan to patron if you can determine the correct identity.
c. Place printed information in queries tray at Zone 3.

Note: If 2 patron groups display for a single patron, press enter and continue to loan. This issue will be resolved in the system within 24 hours of the record being created.

Printing between the Library and C5C

It is possible of course to direct people to C5C when we have printing issues.

However the two printer networks are completely separate.
You cannot 'see' a print job in C5C that you have sent to the Library networked printers, and vice versa.

If you have to send a student over to the C5C computing labs, make sure that they understand they will need to go to a PC, bring up the document and re-send it to the C5C printers before they can print it.

As well: the Student IT Help staff cannot retrieve a file from the network printers for students. Please do not send students to Student Central to print a file. Direct them to the C5C computer labs to use the PCs

4. Advise the Security Office of the nature of the First Aid emergency (eg: heart attack, serious bleeding, breathing difficulty) and request urgent First Aid assistance.
If possible, delegate a staff member at the Library entrance to guide the Security Officers immediately to the emergency site.

5. Security determines if an ambulance is called. They may do so before or after they arrive to assist.

The Macquarie University OneNet WiFi was launched in February 2010, offering the fastest speeds available, expanded coverage, and simpler, always-on connection. Upgrades since have improved coverage and speed.

There are two fast-available wifi networks available on-campus:Macquarie OneNet and Macquarie Public.

Macquarie OneNet
Macquarie OneNet is the easiest, most convenient every-day way for Macquarie University students and staff to connect wirelessly to our campus network and the internet. Wireless equivalence means access to the same apps and websites as when connecting from a wired location. Use your OneID login to connect. Any time your phone or computer or other wifi device is within range after being set up it will connect and authenticate automatically. The results are secure always-on connections without expiry and the ability to avoid costly 3G data access whenever you're in a coverage area.

Macquarie Public
Macquarie Public offers campus visitors access to basic Macquarie University web sites without the need to establish an account. Temporary casual access to the internet and secure intranet sites for students and staff is also possible by accessing a web page and identifying yourself with your Macquarie student or staff ID and password on each visit.

How fast?
OneNet WiFi uses 802.11n base stations that can operate at up to 300Mb/s under optimal conditions. Actual speeds will vary according to location, signal strength, and the number of people connected in your area.

Paying Library fines by phone or online

1. First go to the Catalogue and check MyLibrary (if the student is present) or the Voyager record if they phone in.

2. If you can see the fine on MyLibrary or the Voyager record, the student cannot pay by phone or online. They must physically go to the Cashier, Student Services, Lincoln Building Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

3. If the fine is not on MyLibrary or the Voyager record (you only need to check one), and if the student is a current Macquarie University student (not SIBT, CME or Associate - or staff), then this means that the fine has been transferred to the Cashier, and they can:

a) use the eStudent payment option (as per paying fees).

b) use Visa, MasterCard or American Express by phoning 1300 301 043 (for the cost of a local call within Australia). This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please have your student ID, credit card number, and a pen ready to record your receipt number and date paid.

4. Last and very important: if you or the current Macquarie University student are in any way confused or uncertain concerning what to do, what fine is due, or if the fine is correct, then it is essential to either:
a) fill out a fine query form - to have the fine investigated.
b) contact Access Services directly on x7507 (Monday to Friday 9am-5pm) - to resolve any procedural question and/or to investigate the fine.

We have a number of sources for past exam papers:

1. – the latest 5 years of bound papers, 2006 End-of-Year to 2011 Mid-Year, Level 1 Open Shelves at LG712.M33. E9.
Note - this is a 'latest five years' collection so the range will change through the year. Older material will be cycled into the ARC as new volumes are produced.

2. - 1967 to 2006 Mid-Year - held in ARC at LG712.M33. E9.

3. – the exam papers on e-Reserve, in some cases going back as far as 1998.

4. – if there is no exam paper listed on e-Reserve, and there is a pink 'Unavailable' sheet in the bound volumes, the student will need to check on the relevant Blackboard unit page to see if the lecturer has put it there.

5. - If all above are 'no', the student must contact their lecturer to ask if the exam will be released (the unit tutor may also know). If the answer again is 'no', the final option is to ask the lecturer if they are willing to release some sample questions.

Room Booking Software - basic instructions

Before booking, please check the Note Field of each room (accessed when you click a time on the room booking software to book in the client) . This will tell you who can use the room or pod, for how long and for what purpose.

1. Any booking you make must give the student's name, their ID number and the unit code.

It is not sufficent to enter their name and mobile number. If the student does not know these things, or cannot produce their ID, please apologise but advise them that you cannot book the room without the appropriate proof of identity and purpose. If in doubt, please refer to the Service Coordinator.

2. None of the pods that can be booked by students can be booked as a study room. Refer study queries to the open access group study areas on Levels 1-4 (generally in the middle of each level).

Toilet Area Issues

When you receive any complaint about any toilet, please follow these steps:

First - find out exactly which toilet is the problem. Please be very precise about this eg: Men’s Toilet, Level 3, Postgraduate Reading Room

Second – find out exactly what is wrong. ‘Disgusting’ isn’t useful. Please ask them to describe how it is disgusting eg: paper on floor, water on floor, used needles discarded in the toilets, faecal matter on toilet seats etc.

Third – please advise your Service Coordinator, who will further investigate if needed and then decide on the appropriate action (eg: immediate cleaning, closing of a particular toilet etc).
The Service Coordinator will then fill out the Maintenance and Repair Request Form on the Intranet and ensure any OHS concerns are contained.

During evening shifts and weekends, the Service Coordinator will investigate and contact Security if urgent work is needed. The University has a plumber on retainer for such problems.

Change the Location box to .Electronic Resources

Run search.

NB: If you use the Quick Limit (Electronic Resources) on the Quick Search page, you will get all the electronic journals as well. This may not be a problem if you have a specific search.

2. On Multisearch

Enter the search in the search box and run it.
Use the clouds on the left:
a) under Show Only - select Full Text Online
b) under Refine my Results - select Books
Each time you select a 'cloud' you will see the range of results diminish.
You will end up with the electronic books on this subject.

3. On the Databases webpage

From Library homepage, select the Databases page.
Scroll down to Browse Databases by Subject
Select Electronic Books Service (in the alphabetical listing)
Read through the options and select the appropriate database of ebooks.

4. Additional Information

Only clients able to access the databases can also access the ebooks from the public PCs.

Only current MU staff and students can read them via remote access.

Refer other clients to the Guest Login PCs.

Note that most electronic books have limitations as to how much of the book can be downloaded in one file.

Problems accessing library services remotely

Please use these steps to assist students/staff who are having problems connecting to library services from outside the Library building. In this case library services refers to those services requiring password access eg: databases, eReserve, Document Supply.

When the student/staff contact the Information Desk for assistance, please follow these steps:

For Students:

1. When students report that they cannot access these services, first ask them to check if they can connect to Blackboard. If they cannot, refer them to Student IT Help (x4357 or webpage) for a password reset. If they can connect to Blackboard, go to step 2.

2. Check if the student has recently reset their password. It takes 24 hours for the reset to reach the library servers. This means that they will be able to get into Blackboard, but not into the library services. If no, go to step 3.

3. Has their password been locked? If a student enters their password incorrectly three times, the password is locked out of the library services. They can still access blackboard but not the library services. Refer the student to Student IT Help (x4357) to unlock their password. If no, go to step 4.

4. Check for corrupt cookies: A cookie is a memory in a computer for a url address. The computer uses them to fast-track requests to connect to frequently-used urls. But they can become corrupt and block access. The client needs to clear the cookie cache.
For Windows, go to the windows operating system and type in cookie. Look for clear/delete cookie/cache
For Mac, go to Safari to clear the cache
Turn off the search engine, then reopen it and try to connect to the url. Enter username and password.
If this does not work, go to Step 5

5. Refer to Library IT Help

Ask the student for:
their name, student ID number, and contact details.
the problem (what they were trying to connect to and any error messages), and exactly what happens when they try to connect.
what kind of computer they are using, which operating system is running on their computer and how they are connecting to the internet.
The Service Coordinator will then send a OneHelp request to Library IT Help.

For Staff:

1. For staff, ask if they are permanent or contract. If contract, check if their contract has recently been extended - their library record may have expired. If so, advise them on how to update their record (contact MU Human Resources or get a letter with faculty letterhead from their faculty confirming the new contract expiry date).
If not a problem, go to step 3.

2. If they are permanent, check that they are using the correct Username (MQ + staff ID number) and Password (Gmail password). Note that some staff might still have SB cards during the transition to the new ID card system (Username: SB + ID number; Password: last 8 digits of barcode). If not a problem, go to step 3.

3. Check for corrupt cookies: A cookie is a memory in a computer for a url address. The computer uses them to fast-track requests to connect to frequently-used urls. But they can become corrupt and block access. The staff member needs to clear the cookie cache.

The Service Coordinator will then send a OneHelp request to Library IT Help.

You will see that the date dues on the laminated sheets read two-week loans as due 6.02.2012.

This is because there is to be a Voyager upgrade commencing Friday 27th January and continuing for several days.

To minimise problems during this upgrade, Access Services does not want any loans due in the following week. Thus 2 week loans are being extended until the 6 February.

Remember that we are also closed on the 26th January (Australia Day)

Thesis by Publication or Thesis by Papers

Postgraduates may come the Information Desk asking for a 'thesis by papers'. We call them 'thesis by publication', and this phrase is found on the full record in the Notes field.

The term Thesis by Publication means that the student has used a series of published articles (published by self or self/supervisor), with additional bridging material, to write the thesis.

On the Quick Search page of the Catalogue:
Limit by Thesis in Quick Limit box
Do a Keyword (Boolean) search: thesis and publication and (your subject eg linguistics)

On the Advanced Search page of the Catalogue:
Enter thesis by publication as a phrase (ie change the first down arrow box to "as a phrase") and leave the second box on Keywords.
Click Search.
All thesis in this category (in all subjects) will come up. (As of this date there were 113 theses).
Use the second search box, should you wish, to limit by subject.

NB: This is a less common way of undertaking a thesis, so the selection in any subject area may be low.

Wireless Network on the Campus

The wireless network across campus allows 16 000 concurrent users to log in. The previous usage (post-2011) sat at 6000.

This will allow for an increase of users and devices to gain access to the network while on campus.

VPN or off-campus authorisation to access databases

For Macquarie University staff or students to access licenced content (eg databases) outside the IP range of the university PCs (ie on their own home PC), they must set up a VPN (Macquarie Onenet) access.

NB: Very important - the access must be through Macquarie OneNet (no other option).

Once you have set it up, and authenticated using your OneID login, it is the same as being on Campus.

Can't find a hold in Reserve ?

If a hold can't be found:

1. Check the Reserve shelves
2. Check the desks and trolleys and photocopiers in Reserve
3. Check the MAIN shelves
4. Check the ARC
5. Fill in a missing book report if none of the above (forms located on back shelving at SZ3). Make sure to add the information that it was a hold lost from Reserve as well as note its location as MAIN.

There is also the chance that the book has simply walked...

Finding Peer Reviewed or Refereed Journals

1. Use Multisearch.
Enter the search, and then use the clouds on the left to select for Peer-reviewed Journals and for full-text journal articles.

2. Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory remains a suitable source but doesn't list all the journals.
To use Ulrich's, go to the Database page, and use the Browse Databases by Name.
Select U and then Ulrich's.Cut and Paste the journal title or ISSN (of the journal article to be checked) into the search bar, and select the correct title when the search is done (may be multiple journals with the same title).
Open the full journal title and check for the entry: Refereed.
Yes means the journal is peer-reviewed.
But also check the Start Year to be sure the year of publication is within the year range that is peer-reviewed.

3. Here is a great website to suggest to students who ask about finding Peer Reviewed Journals.
It has been put together by California Poly Library Services. http://lib.calpoly.edu/research/guides/peer.html
It describes what a peer reviewed journal article is and gives a list of some of the databases that flag peer reviewed journals.
Many of the examples are databases that we subscribe to.

Quiet Rooms (Disability Support Unit) Policy

The Disability Support Unit (DSU) staff are responsible for supporting Quiet Room services for students with access swipe cards for the Quiet Rooms. Quiet Rooms are located on Levels 1 and 2 of the Library.

1. Swipe cards are only available from the DSU. Library staff cannot grant access to the rooms if the student has not yet obtained a swipe card from the DSU. If the DSU is closed, the student must contact them next working day.

2. Services and technology within the Quiet Rooms are maintained and provided by the DSU. Library IT for example cannot upgrade or fix the computers in these rooms. The Service Coordinators can report the problem to the DSU next working day.

3. Refer all matters concerning the Quiet Rooms during business hours to the DSU: Level 2 Lincoln Building C8A.

4. Outside business hours: Refer all matters to the Service Coordinator on duty.

Service Coordinators can assist the student to move rooms, open the doors where the student has a valid swipe card that is not currently working, or take note of technology issues to report next business day to the DSU.

24 hour support is available from the Care MQ phone service on 1800 227 367 for distressed students.

5. DSU uses the Quiet Rooms as exam spaces for students with disabilities during the exam period. Refer any issues with arriving Exam Supervisors, or non-attendance of the DSU staff support officer (usually arrives by 9am) to the Service Coordinator on shift.

NB: No other exam spaces exist in the Library.

National Library of Australia - access to databases

The National Library allows remote access to some of their free and paid databases, for example, China Academic Journals (CAJ), American national Biography, Business Who’s Who of Australia, etc.

This access is available to all Australian residents.

Borrowing audio visual equipment

The Library does not lend Audio Visual equipment to students/staff.

The Learning and Teaching Centre will lend equipment, but only to staff.
Students must request that their lecturer/tutor book the equipment and give the students written permission to collect it. The written permission must include the staff member's name and staff number.

infodesk email on student PCs in the Library

The Ask a Librarian Email Us link on the library homepage only works if the PC opening it has a default email client set up eg: Outlook, hotmail etc. Very few home PCs will not have this set up.

However, the student PCs in the Library and C5C do not have an email client set up on them. This is a deliberate IT policy.

It means that if you click on Email Us, nothing will happen. Emails cannot be sent to the infodesk@library email from the student PCs.

Borrowing Privileges at CME's ILC

The Centre for Macquarie English (CME http://www.cme.mq.edu.au/) is an English language centre run by Macquarie Access Ltd. (http://www.accessmq.com.au/).

The Independent Learning Centre (ILC http://www.cme.mq.edu.au/ilc/), located in E3B 416, provides CME students with a wide range of English language learning materials including books, magazines, newspapers, software, audio and video cassettes, CD's, DVD's and a range of web-based language sites.

Opening hours: Mon-Fri: 9-5; Closed weekends and public holidays.

Regarding borrowing privileges at the ILC here is a response from the ILC's manager:

Normally, any University or CME student is allowed to borrow materials from the ILC. However, there are restrictions on MQ University students in that they cannot borrow -fiction/DVDs/magazines/course books/teacher reference materials.

SIBT students cannot borrow at the ILC unless they are enrolled in an English course at CME.

There are times the ILC may have a special request beyond these rules (e.g. distance students, uni lecturers). In these cases people should talk to the ILC's manager Carol Carpp (xtn: 6108, carolann.carpp@mq.edu.au). The ILC makes exceptions based on the required materials (such as those not as popular with CME students) and the length of time needed. Also, if someone needs access to an ILC resource not available for loan, they may be allowed look at them in the ILC and photocopy there.

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System: http://www.ielts.org ) section is open to everyone under the following conditions:
1. they are all closed reserve - no one can take them home
2. CME students can borrow free of charge
3. MQ University, SIBT, non-card carrying individuals are permitted to use IELTS resources for a $3/day charge.

If further clarification is required it is recommended that the client contacts the ILC directly.

We don’t generally accept donations. They are far too costly to process. Often students will try, with the best will in the world, to donate their old textbooks which are quickly superseded or which we already have several copies of.

If the person is insistent then please contact Louise Abdilla (for Social Science and Humanities Books), or Kirsten Versendaal (Science Books) before accepting.

If the person believes that have rare, unique or otherwise beneficial items it should be assessed by the relevant Liaison Librarian, who will also liaise with IR Staff. Simply provide them with their card and ask them to email or otherwise contact them. Do not accept the material in the meantime.

Dvds from Reserve

Videos and DVDs in the Reserve collection have NEVER been available on overnight loan to students.

DVDs can be borrowed for 3 hours only during the day if the student(s) have a laptop capable of playing DVD, and at the end of that time MUST be returned to Reserve.

Thesis Supervisor

Should a client ask about identifying a Thesis Supervisor, you can do so on the catalogue for 2008 + theses.

The information is located on the full record of the thesis, so use the Advance Search screen.
Enter the Supervisor name and then click the down arrow on the Ketword search bar. The last option is 'Thesis Supervisor'.

There are no plans to update older thesis records on the catalogue.

After Hours Reading Room

The After Hours Reading Rooms are available to Macquarie University students wishing to continue studying after the Library is shut.

At least one AHRR (subject to demand) will be open when the university is in semester, including in the 'assignment breaks' in the middle of semester. Hours can change on weekends, public holidays and in semester breaks, but the 'standard opening time' is from the Library shuts until (a) no MU students are in the AHRR, (b) students are disruptive and evicted by Security or (c) 2am.

The After Hours Reading Rooms are closed in January/February 2012. They will reopen for Session 1 (27 February 2012). Refer to the Properties website for further information: http://www.ofm.mq.edu.au/ahsr.html

Quick Search Tips

1. To find a journal in Westlaw, open the database and type the title of the journal into the "Search these databases" box on the left of the screen. What we call a journal, Westlaw calls a "database".

2. An index of journal titles comes up. Select your title. Once you have clicked on the journal title in Westlaw, a search box appears. To find a particular article, type the title of the article (in inverted commas) into the search box. This seems to work better than using the Field search option.

3. Westlaw does not have a browse function. It works in the same way as LexisNexis ie. you can search within an individual journal but you cannot browse issue by issue.

4.The number of results from your search is displayed under "results lists" (top left side of the screen). Directly underneath is a link to "full screen list" which brings up all the results of your search (20 per screen). Click on the right arrow at the bottom to go to the next set.

5. The links under "results plus" are similar to the "related results" you get on other databases. They are not part of your initial search.
